Default Not impressed with 19.5's

I finally got around to putting on the Rickson wheels and Michelin 225/70R19.5 XZE (G rated) on the truck. They balanced up real nice, the tire guys were amazed at how they all needed a tiny amount of weight. I set them at 70 psi and went for a drive, knowing they would squirm I was prepared ... so I thought. The first 20 miles was like driving on ice. The next 200 miles things got a little better. Then this last weekend I hooked up my trailer 8k lbs and took a 800 mile round trip. On the way there I ran them at 70 psi and it was a white knuckle experience ... squirm and wander. On the way back I tried a number of gas station before I found one where I could get the full 110 psi into them. At first they seamed better, but when some heat go into them (measured at 100 deg F and trailer tires held at 70 deg F) they got squirmy again. I crossed the scales, the front axle was 4350 lbs and rear 4650 lbs.

So I've got ~1000 miles on them and they haven't settled down. I think I'm going back to my OEM tires and wheels. Craig's list here come my new tires.

At city speeds they run real nice and smoother than I ever expected, however at 60-70 mph they are squirmy.

Thanks for sharing .I thought the Ricksons looked good on our trucks ,but I can't afford to experiment at that level. I'll stick with the 285-16 E rated Firestones transforces on stock wheels for now. They work well for my truck.

Damn. Here I thought there were going to be a inexpensive set of Rickson rims on Craigslist.
I will stick with my Toyo 285's.

The problem may be that they are G rated. E or H rated tires are better. Gs are just too soft for that weight.

I put A set of SRW 6.75 steel 19.5s on Mine with the XDS2 16 ply Michelins on Mine and couldn't be more pleased. 70psi all the way around and they handle as well as the E rated BFGs I had before plus I shouldn't need tires again for another 100,000 miles. I can not tell much difference in ride but with Kelderman air ride it is smooth loaded or empty on any tires.

I've had Ricksons one for about 10 or 11 years now. They first arrived with Goodyear G159's on, the same as the UPS truck that brought'em. I loved'em, but, when the time came to replace the tires, it was not as nice. The Sumitomos that I bought the first time around weren't bad, but, they didn't last as long as the Goodyears. The Hercules tires wore decently, but, they shook a LOT at highway speeds, and I'm pretty that the incessant vibrations contributed to some fluid leaks here and there. I got rid of them way before they were worn out. I'm now riding on some Kumhos, and they're pretty nice, just vibrating a little bit @ around 80-ish.

If I've still got this truck 2-3 years from now, I'm about tempted to go back to stock size wheels.
