Default Dodge Ram D50 Diesel/Mitsubishi Mighty Max Diesel

Well with the rising cost of diesel ($4.15 a gallon in my area) its getting pretty un-economical to drive my 1992 Dodge around so I began looking around on the internet for something a little cheaper to drive and I came up with either a Mitsubishi Mighty Max or the Dodge Ram D50 and with either the Mitsu. 4D55 or 4D56 turbo diesel engine. Does anyone know anyhting about these? Or possibly where one might be? Are they a very long lived engine?

Any and all help will be appreciated,
Cory Willbanks

I've seen them sell on ebay about 3-4 times a year, saw a super clean one go for $7500 in California last year. They seem to have rust issues, at least the few I've seen were northern trucks. If one turned up within 1,000 miles of my house I'd get it but so far the closest one was in Iowa. Like other fuel efficient vehicles their value is rising with the pump price.

Huh, well they sound like a pretty desirable little truck, I want one ha ha ha. I bet that it would be fairly inexpensive to rebuild those little enignes. As much as I dislike foriegn made stuff these little japanese made vehicles have really proven themselves to be pretty tough little trucks. I found one in my hometown last year with a completely rebuilt engine for thirteen hundred. What had happened was they had the engine gone through and got it all put back together and it had a cracked head so they put a new head on it BUT they used the same old head gasket so it was leaking. I wasn't really interested at the time so i passed up on it. Well I talked to the guy last month that had it for sale and he said he had sold it but it was back up for sale. But the guy that bought it had used THREE CANS OF ETHER on it trying to get started and then decided he didn't want it. I wonder if the engine would be any good still cause if it is I bet I can track the little pickup down again? Any thoughts?

I've been looking to do a 4bt project but I think a smaller diesel would fit my needs. Saw this while digging around on Ebay, Diesel Rabbit Truck , wow.

I have a Datsun diesel project that I 've recently become more motivated about.
My old one ran good and was rated at 41 mpg. Wish I'd kept it !
New project will involve transplanting diesel and tranny into gas Nissan stretched cab 4x4. Gas engine is toast and tranny in pieces. Plan on going 2wd with front hubs unlocked for awhile.
As far as the Mitsu diesel, they are kinda rare these days around here. But years ago they were pretty tough .

Hey speak of the Devil! There was just a Mitsubishi 4d56 Turbo diesel and automatic 4wd tranny for sale on e bay. The current bid was like $170 os something like that. it came from japan and it was a takeout with like 70k miles on it. I guess that over there they aren't allowed to have vehicles with more than 60k on them

Well on my trip to kansas to see my sister(thats where I am now) I found one of the samll dodge pickups mith the gas engine in it but the engine is shot so i am thinking about re powereing it with the 4d56 Mitsubishi diesel that would have originally came with it cause the rest of the truck is very clean. That is if I can get the truck for a fair price. What are everyone elses thoughts?

Much apptreciated,
Cory Willbanks

I had a 1983 D50 Diesel 4x4 (5 spd) (1st in Western Canada). Absolutely great truck! I put 375,000km on it when I sold it. I did crank the timing a bit (rather unscientific method), and turned in the boost screw on the top. Hauled a slide in camper or a snowmobileinto the back woods nearly every weekend. Now weak points. the 12V - 6V glow resister likes to fail. bypass it with an manual switch and keep on only 3 - 8 secs. Truck will start! 5th Gear - truck makes more torque that tranny will take, use top quality synthetic in trans and take it out of 5th when pulling hard. I averaged 750km/tank year around (Calgary AB.) I would buy another one.
