Default Durango/Cummins Swap

I have my eye on a 2000 Durango with a bad v8, if the price is right I'll be installing a 4bt soon. I figured I'd run it by y'all for some advice and or input. It is a 4x4, but I'm not sure if its a solid front axle or not, I'm not really concerned with keeping the 4x4 intact. Is this suv rated as being a 1/2ton truck? Any forseeable problems with regard to suspension or weight? My goal is to exceed 30mpg, and keep the project under 5k. Any suggestions?

Front is Wishbone style suspension. Not sure what the rating on it would be though.

I would think that it should handle the weight. I'm not sure that there would be much of a difference in weight. Transmission and transfer case might make more of a difference in fit than anything else.

Hope it all works out.

Sounds like a very interesting project. Don't forget to take some pictures - before - during - after.

I think the Durango is indeed rated as a 1/2 ton.

I belive you goal is going to be very hard to attain. Most 4BT's in running condition run for 2500 or more, plus then you have transmisson to deal with. Also the 4bt is very heavy, so you need to design and fab a suspension. But heres a good place to get alot of info on 4bt swaps http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php

yes its labor intensive, but would be worth it, just finding the donor is a big cost that I see.

Check this site for some 4bt engines. They occasionally have one still in a shipping crate with zero hours. Worth looking anyway. http://cgi.govliquidation.com/
And, yes it can be a gamble unless it is located close enough to take a look at it first. Considered one they had in Jacksonville for a boat transplant, but the weight was a bit on the high side. It is essentially a 6bt with two cylinders chopped of.
