Default How to install overhead Console Clips

Replacing my overhead console as the old one fell apart. New one (OEM part) came with the new metal push in clips, but I cannot get them seated in the socket. The pan (above the headliner) flexes so much while pushing the clip upward into the socket, that I'm sure the clip is touching roof and therefore I can't seat them. I removed the screws holding the pan, but it won't come out as its much wider then the headliner.

I tried holding down on the pan but it just flexes too much. Anyone have any tricks?

Only advice I have is to put something above the headliner to stiffen it up in order to install the overhead.

In case anyone else comes across this: It ended up being a two person job. Used a pair of vice grips on a allen wrench. Got the allen wrench above the headliner and turned it to grab the pan and pull down. Still couldn't get the clips in. Since the originals were broken and came out in pieces I believe the original console didn't use metal clips, but plastic. I ended up having to use a Dremel tool to open the slots until the clips inserted fully. What should have taken minutes to do, took an hour and a half.
