Mine leaked but checking the bell housing nothing ever showed. Replaced pan gasket twice, didn't fix it. Finally dropped tranny and the seal had spun. This was the first time I have ever seen the seal spun. Anyway, it's fixed.

Well, hasn't leaked for a month, then leaked all day Thursday, nearly a quart, then almost none on Friday...
Buddy of mine in a diesel shop in Ohio says the pan gasket is prime suspect, but I'm really thinking rear seal is more likely.
You know, when you look up between the engine and trans, between the two rear center pan bolts is the main seal housing, about a half inch deeper in there than the oil pan flange..
Well, there's this little black drop right there..
Wipe it off and it comes right back in about 5 seconds....
That seems pretty conclusive to me, or am I missing something...?

Yup, clean in that area too.
Is the engine breather clean?

Did you try tightening the pan bolts at all? Sometimes its something simple. (But in all honesty, it never really is, is it!)

Thats right where mine was leaking. Like I said, turned out to be the rubber seal around the rear main seal. Never saw it before this one and haven't seen one since.

Yes, checked the oil pan bolts, all were good. Turned each one just a bit, less than 1/4 turn but they were snug.
I removed the oil cap while running the other day. No CC pressure that I could detect.
The CCV filter was changed about a year ago.
I find it strange that it leaks one day and not the next, or leaks part of the day and then doesn't..
Makes me think I might have the same situations as klmahnke.

Have you guys heard it recommended that you NOT put a stock gasket back in??
Shop guy says use "The Right Stuff" from Permatex, no gasket..??
He's done dozens.

I put a quart of Lucas in it last week when it was leaking all day and it was a lot better,
But yesterday, 2 hrs and 50 miles and it was all wet and dripping again.
