That must be some bunch down there that can't see loose U bolts or a bad tie rod end on a truck.

Smoke, bet you get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside rushing out on a call knowing about that.

Apply for a job? Hmmm, pay probably isn't that great...plus the main thing.....I'd have to open my tool box & start working again.

Yeah, it was a warm fuzzy feeling alright.

Now if it was critically worn, the chief woulda had me behind the "brown door" when I refused to leave the station for a call because the apparatus was not safe.
Sometimes you gotta take a stand and be heard.

It wasn't gonna fall off, but we have plenty of very narrow roads with more crown than your average highway, so the truck tends to want to go to the right anyway, but if you got too close to the edge that slack would cause it to dart for the ditch, sorta roll off the edge of the pavement.
I've scared a couple people, but I had control the whole time.
I never snatch it back on the road, just ease er back, but I've seen my captains eyes get big with a culvert coming up.

I watched them check the front end of another truck once,
they used the pry bar method, I use the steering-wheel-wiggle method, shows what's moving and what's not.
The pry bar may or may not work depending on what pressure is on the linkage at the time.

If I understand right, the chief has had discussions with the shop manager about the issue, but the shop says there's nothing wrong.

There's not a safety officer for the city, there's one in each dept. and ours don't know squat about trucks.
He would like you to think he knows all about everything, but some of his past "facts" haven't cyphered out, and he knows that I know it.

You can use a prybar to check wheel bearings & kingpins.

For our shop, having the city working on their own stuff is a blessing for us, to a degree.. We get the stuff they can't or won't fix. You'd think we were central garage at times. About a month or so ago, we had like 5-6 firetrucks in there for various things.

One of pumper trucks we did came back twice, & now won't leave. One of the aerial ladder trucks keeps coming back. They're both headaches.

I know what you mean about the pry bar for wheel bearings and kingpins, but they were actually prying on the knuckle joints on the steering linkage.

What's the story on the one that won't leave ??
What kind of aerial ??

They changed the tie rod end and tightened the U-bolts, I can see FOUR clean threads on each one
Nobody has a report on what actually went down, but I'm 99% sure they didn't touch the engine.
I'll probably know by the end of the day.

Update: Talked with the chief personally on Wednesday and he claims he hasn't heard half of what I've been telling them is wrong with the truck.
As soon as we get the one back that's got the head pulled off, this one is going to the shop....and I don't mean the city garage.
FINALLY !!
