Why wont my truck make heat
Just this winter my truck has stoped making heat. The temp guage just barely gets into the operating range and the heat out of the vents is luke warm at best. If Ive been in it and the engine is as hot as its gonna get, if I turn the heat on it will blow a little hot air at first but then returns to luke warm. Ive done the thermostat twice, and even tried card board over the radiator, still didnt get hot????? Even puling a load the water temp never gets any where close to 180 and the heat sucks.

Sure sounds like you still have Tstat issues if it isn't coming up to temp under load. May want to try a new rad cap as well. However with that being said the heaters in these things just plain suck, i freeze in mine all winter long and minedoes come up to temp.

Did you use aftermarket t/stats, or get it from Cummins? Not to be smart, is it installed the right way because they can be installed backwards.
Couple of other things...it could be the core plugged up, could be the water pump not circulating the coolant. If you drained it all the way down when you replaced the t/stats, could also be an air pocket in the system.

Yea i did the t stat twice. because i thought it might have been in wrong. Bith were cummins parts. As far as I can tell its in the right way. Has an arrow saying this side to radiator (if i remember correctly) what role does the little check valve and line by passing the t stat play?

The jiggle valve in the t/stat and the bypass line are mainly for an air bleed and just a way for a small amount of coolant to circulate.

what about the fan, could that be causing the trouble?

What fan are you referring to, the engine fan or the blower motor fan?
If the engine fan is staying engaged all the time, which is unusual, then that can cause an overcooling situation. If it is staying engaged all the time, you should be able to hear it.

you need to see if the engine is building heat or not.
do you have a hand held pyrometer? i always check the middle of the block and the cylinder head where there is coolant before the thermostat. then you can check the radiator and see if there is any heat there, just follow the heat.
check the inlet and outlet of the heater core hoses and see if there is a drop in temp or if any heat is going in the cab at all.

I agree with checking the temp of the block to see what kind of heat it is producing. If the block is not getting warm then you need to concentrate on the thermostat as to why it will not let the engine get warm. It also sounds like you have another issue with the heater core itself. The core could be getting plugged up or there is a blockage of some sort not allowing full flow to the core.
