Default Herb Oil for Lycoming

Herb,
I recently acquired another toy with a Lycoming O-320 carburated updraft. It has the external oil cooler. Normlly I always use Aero Shell Plus and change the oil about every 40-50 hours. Does Amsoil make oil that I could use in this ac motor and does Amsoil have a filter that will withstand the high oil pressure? Thanks

Daniel

BC, congrats on the new toy and good choice for a small engine. Is it an O320-H2AD? The H models are easy to identify as they hold 6 qts of oil versus 8 for the others and have no bolt on accessory drive section. Lycoming specs LW-16702 additive for their engines and is required on H models.

You do not have an H model engine as you have 2 magnetos instead of a dual magneto (2 mags in a common housing) and your accessory section bolts to the back of the case halves. Use Aeroshell 40 or 50 plus and the additive and I would fabricate some baffle to assure cylinder head and barrel cooling. Engines have a data tag somewhere on it with timing, model information, serial no. etc, common locations are the oil sump side or front etc. Change oil at 25 hrs of operation as you have a screen instead of a filter (I do not see a canister filter in the pics). Disregard if you have a spin on. Happy motor, er, floatering

Man that sucks! Do you know any companies that carry oil equal to Amsoil quality?

I've got to get an oil filter for it. It does have the screen right now. When I get home I'll be doing complete maintenance on the motor and try and get the correct engine data. I would def feel better with an oil filter on it. What kind of baffle are you talking about? It has mufflers on it. Should a replace the vernatherm valve to be safe? I have not seen the boat in person yet, but the motor has been overhauled and my stepdad said it runs REALLY strong for a 4 banger.
