Default APPS failed... Twice?

Hey guys,

Been away for a while. Missed you all.

So my check engine light comes on and almost right away the truck starts to surge and generally behave in a disappointing manner. She gets me home and I checked the codes. Yup, P0121.

I find a new one, no trouble. Install it, also without a hitch. Start it up, reset the APPS and go for a drive.

Nothing is changed. Same code, same symptoms, same embarrassment of idling along in third gear... I wouldn't have thought that she had any more surprises for me but, tada.

Any ideas? Did I just buy a DOA part?

Where did you get the APPS from? I keep a spare Timbo's with me. You might want to check and clean all the connections including grounds. The APPS is a low voltage signal and is more subject to voltage drop issues.

Thanks Cougar. I got it from Canadaparts1988 on ebay. He's in Edmonton like me, so I figured he had to be good. The part itself was made by Standard Motor Products.

The TPS I'm replacing was new about 20,000km ago, so this is a little weird. I may have jumped the gun on replacing it straight off...

I'm gonna go check out the wiring and clean the truck side of the sensor after I finish work today. Or was that beer and bbq? I need to check my calendar...

The last time I used a Standard Motor Product item I wasn't impressed. They use to be quality OEM replacements, but not lately.

I didn't know Timbo had APPSs, ccmckee. That's what I get for not being around for so long. I assumed Max has them, but I looked around his site on the weekend and it looks like he is still getting around to being online... Once I get this sorted out, I'll be carrying a spare so I wouldn't mind having the Timbo APPS coordinates.

Clunk, the garbage I just installed cost a tad more than 200 USD, so could you send a source for that as well? I found their site, but no dealer. I'd like a closer look. It seems that if the requirement stays around long enough, somebody gets around to building it the way it should have been in the first place.

I just R&R'd the same APPS three times, so I'm an expert now. I also cleaned the connector to death. Once, while I had the assembly dismounted, it seemed to work properly just using my thumb to move the throttle, but it screwed up again after I remounted it. Starting to wonder if it might not be an ECM problem. Mr. Standard in Edmontonia is going to sent me a replacement so I'll let you all know how that goes.

Using a Fluke 78 DVOM with dropping out digits on the digital display....it cost me lots of dollars to have my 78 repaired under warranty to fix my DVOM. Haven't bought a Fluke since....
