Default Speedometer went crazy

My speedometer on Old Red started to start working like a tachometer, months ago the odometer stopped working yesterday the speedometer went crazy. It goes from 0mph to 100mph in just feet depending how far the pedal is put down. think it's the part that always breaks on these older trucks, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it

Start with removing the ratio adapter and plugging the VSS directly into the transfer case. your speedometer will be off, but it will be steady. If it isn't, then the ratio adapter isn't the problem. Next step, try a different VSS. If that doesn't do it, it's probably in the wiring. As for the odometer, it's common for the gears in the speedometer head to break. The fix for that is replacing those gears. I believe those gears are still available, but not by a Dodge part number. I'll do a little research on that.

I would check the speedometer cable first. If it even has one.

I went thru about 3 of them in 17 years, they are easy to replace, usually cost about $3X.00 at Oreilleys in the USA. I think it bolts into the transfer case if I remember correctly, just make sure the wifey knows what the transfer case looks like when shes under there doing it.

Delux speedo here in Denver does all of mine. Whether it’s a head or the ratio box at the t case. Call me and we can figure it out.
