Default Cummins 8.3

Ok, you guys in the business, what do you know/think about the cummins red top 8.3...2007 model.

Looking at a freightliner M2, single axel, 6 speed auto, sleeper with an 8.3 to haul sheds.
About 350k miles on it. Looks like it's never been cleaned, all oily, but don't see it leaking form anywhere specific.
I know it's had an EGR cooler replaced in the past, and the DPF had to have dealer service twice.
It's also my understanding that the DPF can be deleted...????

Drove peterbuilt's with 8.3's delivering septic systems before.
Now, when we had 2 tanks on the truck and 3 on the trailer behind it we was LOADED, but were talking concrete tanks, 7000# each, so 35,000# of payload!!
Never get half that with buildings.

What you guys know about em??

Hey Smoke, been awhile. I'm not turning wrenches much anymore, but we still get a fair amount of Cummins work in the shop.

Most of the problems I've seen lately is with the emissions stuff...EGR valves & coolers, DPFs & DOCs. Most of the time it's the cooler going bad that causes all the problems with the other stuff.

I'm sure there are delete kits out there, but I don't know from who off the top of my head. Last year I test drove an ambo from a local VFD, had the 6.7 in it. The EGR valve & cooler were deleted, the valve had a block off plate in place. Still had the DOC & DPF hooked up, but no wiring going to them from what I can remember. They could have been hollowed out for all I know That thing hauled ass...like it's supposed to do. Talked to the guys when they picked it up, they kinda played dumb & didn't reveal too much. I'd like to know how the CEL wasn't on with all that stuff unhooked.

Hey RAF!
Glad to know youre still lurking in the shadows!

EGR cooler looks just like a 6.7....not a side by side comparison...
A local shop does deletes on big rigs.
Figure they could help
Just wanted to make sure there werent any major intetnal issues wirh these engines.
The auto tranny scares me a little, but i know allisons have been working hard for years.

Yes, still here but not as much.

You know what model Allison is in it? Generally don't have many problems with them internally, most of it is electrical/electronics...the ECU.

I dont know, but a guy who use to drive it & is pretty knowledgable said its the same one they put in school busses.
There may be more than one of those, i dont know.
I drove it.
Shifts out smooth, up and down & tops out at 80.

Do these trucks have some sort of programming that wont let air build till the engine warms?
The current owner said it was always delayed at startup, like 5 minutes the day i drove it, but fine after that.

Vontrapp has 2 M2's, with the Mercedes engines mind you, and both have the allison 6 spds. We have not had one lick of trouble with the tranny's nor the engines one has 751,000 km (465,000 mi) on it the other has 695,000 km (430,000mi). The biggest issues we have had is with the electrical body connections for everything. He also runs that special tranny fluid they recommend for the allison, sorry can't remember the name but it has a long change out cycle. Both don't have any delay with building air so may be something to look into. His also never had any emissions on them.

Then it's probably a 1000/2000 series trans. If you look under it & see a small external spin on filter next to the pan, then it's a 1000/2000.

Transyn is Allison's fluid...$$$, Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid is approved to use. Little cheaper than the other.

No, that thing should start building air as soon as the truck starts, unless the air system held full air overnight...which most trucks won't.

Air definitely wasn't full...all the way down.
Truck hadn't been cranked in a few weeks he said, maybe a month.
Owner said it had always done that....?

I sure didn't know, but since "they" think the truck needs to be smarter than the driver these days I could see the possibility of no air pressure till engine temp starts to climb, to keep you from driving off with a cold engine and producing more emissions...?
But guess that's not the case....
