Default Hard Start and lots of Black smoke??

My truck has always started up easily. This weekend while I was up at the ski hill it didn't want to start. Usually fires up on the first crank. This time I lugged it for almost 5 seconds, then again, on the third attempt it fired up but had a tonne of black smoke. It was just below the freezing temperature and only slightly higher elevation. Any ideas??

First thing that comes to mind with a hard start and black smoke would be a bad or failing injector. Are the injectors original to your truck?

When was the last time before this happened that you got fuel? Do you use a fuel treatment? If so, how often? When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Any water in the fuel? Any drop in fuel pressure lately?

Was it cold enough for the fuel to start gelling?

The injectors are original. The truck has 130K miles on it. It wasn't that cold -8 C. So no fuel gel issues. I did fill it recently, but it had no troubles starting in town. Fuel pressure seems good, I have a gauge and a FASS system so I don't think it should have any water in the fuel.

Injector (s) are probably in order. Max can fix you up with a new set or rebuild the ones you have.

Wait to start light? Do you mean was there a delay? I didn't notice and the truck has started just fine for the last 4 days. I will be at the ski hill again tomorrow. So I will watch closely. If it struggles to start? Is there anything tricks I can do to get her rollin?

Have you added any conditioner to the fuel?
I'd wait & see how it starts a few more times before doing anything.

The wait to start light is on the dash and lights to give the grid heaters time to warm up. When it goes out then you try to start it. You can also try cycling the grid heaters a couple of times to help it start.
