Default Not so Merry Christmas

Not so merry Christmas around here. If you haven't heard on the news, my company was hit Friday by a ransom ware cyber virus. It shut down the part 121 side of the company immediately. The part 135 side was able to stay open (mostly) for business because us old school guys kept paper copies of records off the books. The FBI warned us weeks ago we where a target. What happened after that leaves some of us wondering if the hackers didn't have inside help. The IT department did nothing to back up our data. The IT department didn't follow the FBI's plan to help locate and trap the hackers. The timing was perfect. A Friday afternoon before a holiday week. The IT department actually triggered the attack by not following the FBI's plan and alerted the hackers by taking certain actions they could see. This attack was fatal for most systems leaving us unable to access aircraft maintenance records including manuals. Next, an HR office worker in charge of payroll "forgot" to set up the pay schedule 2 days earlier. Most of us didn't get paid until after the banks closed Christmas eve. Even so, the amount we got paid may not be correct. No pay stubs. One guy in my understaffed department quit over it. Needless to say, no one in my department was happy about either event. A number of IT people along with an HR person have been fired and are being looked into by the FBI.
At this time, we have hired an outside IT firm to asses the damage and salvage what they can. Last word was not very optimistic though they have been able to get our maintenance tracking program on line on 2 computers at 1 location (not ours). That allowed our part 121 side to reopen. At this point everyone will get new hard drives for their computers and tasked with rebuilding the data base pertinent to their departments.

awe man - that sucks big time. I worry about crap like that more and more and just pray "get me through to retirement without something like this" and then double check my backups. Sadly, a lot of these worthless waste of O2 can plant a ransom or malware that sits silent long enough to infest and invalidate the backups, too.
A friend of mine that manages IT at nursing homes just spent 2-3 weeks of nearly 24/7 hours to rebuild their systems after a ransomware attack.
Best of luck and I hope you all get things back and running.

Latest update. The FBI said the virus was implanted via malicious emails in early November. The emails targeted certain users at specific locations in order to be able to infect the servers at that location. Someone had to know when that person was on their computer in order to trigger the virus. Again, smells like an inside job. Because of what I call mergeritus, the company is filled with disgruntled employees. A large number left, other got that "your services are no longer needed" love letter. The rest of us hang in limbo, at each others throats trying to protect their job at the cost of others from any further "right sizing". I saw the same thing at my last place of employment when the mergers started.
